2nd Onchan Beavers – Lawn Bowls Competition

Posted on July 28th, 2018 by admin

Well done to those Beavers who attended the Lawn Bowls Competition in Onchan Park on Saturday 7 July. It was a slightly misty start, but that didn’t hinder performance or enjoyment.

Eight Beavers from both the 2nd Onchan Tuesday Colony and the 2nd Onchan Thursday Colony played two rounds of Lawn Bowls Activities – nearest the jack, in between the cones, hitting the marker etc. It was great fun and really well organised by volunteers and members of the Onchan Lawn Bowls Club in Onchan Park.

Once the two rounds had been played, two Beavers from each Colony with the highest scores then played against each other in the Final. Taylor and Oliver from the Tuesday Colony and Malane and Jayden from the Thursday Colony. They all completed one round of Activities – it was very close but the winner by one point was Oliver from the 2nd Onchan Tuesday Colony with Malane from the Thursday Colony in second place.

Oliver received the Lawn Bowls Beaver Trophy 2018 from Bev Hewson (Assistant Island Commissioner – Beavers), and everyone taking part received medals. It was a lovely morning, supported by family members. Thank you very much to the Lawn Bowls Club for hosting the group and they hope to be back next year to do it all again.

Report on Snaefell Cub’s camp at Ardwhallan

Posted on May 16th, 2016 by admin

O1ver the weekend of 6th-8th May 2016 Cubs from 2nd Onchan’s Snaefell Cub Pack attended camp at Ardwhallan Outdoor Education Centre. On Friday evening, after arriving at Ardwhallan and settling in, the Cubs went out exploring the centre by doing some orienteering around the grounds. After this we had a couple of games of Long Ball whilst the sun set before heading up to the Viking Longhouse for hot chocolate, biscuits, some stories and jokes. Those that were still feeling energetic then headed back out for a couple of man hunt wide games in the field. Everyone got caught in the end except for myself managing to sneak past the Cubs and make it in! We then all walked back to the house and headed to bed with the cubs asleep by 12:30.

Up at 7:30 we had breakfast and inspection followed by some free time before our morning activities. The Cubs were split into two groups and took on the challenges of the Low Ropes and a Blindfold trail through some thick vegetation before swapping over. After a quick juice break it was on to Archery and Backwards Cooking where the Cubs made some delicious stuffed potatoes and cheesy twisted dough balls on the hot coals of the fire. After lunch we decided to postpone our hike and headed into Onchan for a trip to the Fun Barn as the weather was a bit wet. Following a couple of hours of jumping into the ball pits and racing each other down the slides we headed to the Scout Hall for some games and dinner. We then headed back and watched a couple of films with cake and popcorn. Most of the cubs took themselves off to bed or fell asleep on the giant beanbags during the films.

After a well deserved lie in we had a hearty breakfast of bacon sandwiches before packing our kit away and heading to Windy Corner for a gentle and enjoyable hike. Back at Ardwhallan the Cubs helped tidy the house before prize giving and being collected.

All the Cubs said they had a great time over the weekend and can’t wait for the next camp. I’d like to say a massive thank you to our Leaders (Rob and Mark) for helping run the camp and also to Andrew (Snakey), Charlotte and Dan for popping in over the weekend to help with activities and driving the minibus. It was a great team effort by the Leaders and together with the excellent behavior of the Cubs made for a fantastic camp!!

Onchan Thursday Beaver Colony complete ‘The 2015 Beaver Challenge’

Posted on December 28th, 2015 by admin

Beaver Challenge 2015 photoAt the start of the year Beaver Colonies on the Island were given information regarding ‘The 2015 Beaver Challenge’. This challenge consists of twelve mini challenges to be completed at any time from 1st Jan to 31st Dec 2015. The twelve challenges are split into four sections: ‘Ourselves’, ‘Others’, ‘Our World’ and ‘Fame’.

On Thursday 17th December, Onchan Thursday and Onchan Tuesday Beavers held their Christmas party at the Fun Barn in Onchan. The Beavers had great fun at the party and towards the end of it Onchan Thursday Beavers sang the Colony song they had composed for one of the twelve challenges. This was the last one they had to do. Having completed all twelve they were then presented with individual Beaver Challenge certificates and a trophy for the Colony. Samuel Corkill received this trophy on behalf of the Colony from Bev Hewson (AIC Beaver Scouts).

One of the other challenges was to complete a log of the various activities undertaken. Onchan Beavers took part in some great activities which are described in their log.

Sixteen very smart and well behaved Beavers took part for the first time in the parade and service. 2nd Onchan Scout Group, along with members of the public and various invited guests from the local Community, paraded from Onchan Park to St Anthony’s Church for a short service.

It was a memorable day for first time Flag Bearer David L. from Tuesday Beavers, but he was given some sound advice and encouragement from British Legion Standard Bearer – Dougie Porter.

The Tooth Fairy Vists 2nd Onchan Thursday Beavers

Posted on October 14th, 2014 by admin

2nd Onchan Thursday Beavers had a visit from the Dentist! Tooth Fairy Wilson spoke to the Beavers about Sugar Bugs and the importance of brushing your teeth properly. The Beavers were each given a mask, gloves and mirror and had a great time looking at people’s teeth. I wonder if any of our Beavers will go on to become a Dentist?

Dentist 1The Beavers also found out that not all countries have a Tooth Fairy that brings money in exchange for a tooth. In some countries children leave their tooth in a slipper and receive a gift. Our thanks go to Tooth Fairy Wilson for a fun and informative evening.
