Scouts, leaders and parents from ‘Viking’ Troop, 1st Malew Scout Group and Explorers from ‘Wolf Pack’, Southern Explorers did the 2015 Jamboree On The Trail by doing a ‘walk with a purpose’.
The purpose was walking a mile of beach and foreshore between Castletown and Derbyhaven clearing rubbish washed up by the tide.
Particular attention was paid to the fiddly little bits of plastic such as cotton bud sticks, bottle tops, fishing line and other small pieces of plastic. The reason to target these particular items was to protect the marine wild life and sea birds who ingest these bits and sometimes die. One small bag contained over 500 individual small pieces.
However, large items were also picked up. The Scouts found a broken mast for a wind surfer and the Explorers not wanting to be out done un earthed (or should that be un-beached) a 5 meter square piece of fishing net.
The Scouts endeavours were assisted by Bill Dale of ‘Beach Buddies’ who also attended to loan the Scouts pick up sticks and bin bags, and then removed all the rubbish collected. Thanks Bill!
On concluding the session hot dogs , jaffa cakes and juice were enjoyed by all.
